Talented council employees will join local schoolchildren for a special performance to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
The Basildon Big Sing Choir, made up of Basildon Council employees, will sing with the Rayleigh Big Sing Choir and pupils from St Anne Lines Junior School on Friday 26 January. They will perform opposite Debenhams in the Eastgate Centre at 2pm.
The event has been organised to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day, which marks the date of the liberation of Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. The theme for 2018 is ‘the power of words.’
Mayor of Basildon, Cllr David Harrison, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is a time for us to learn lessons from the past and send out a clear message that discrimination, hatred and exclusion will not be tolerated.
“You can show your support by pausing to listen to the choir sing and remember the millions who lost their lives or had their lives changed beyond recognition.”
A one minute silence will be observed by staff and visitors to the Basildon Centre at 11am. There will also be a Holocaust Memorial Display on the day and a book of remembrance for visitors to sign.
