Staff from Chelmsford-based developer Barratt and David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties have taken part in the Great Tommy Sleep Out, raising vital funds for The Royal British Legion (RBL).

The event, held at Chelmsford City Racecourse on Tuesday 25th March, challenged participants to spend a night sleeping under the stars, raising awareness and funds to support veterans facing homelessness and those with disabilities.

The Great Tommy Sleep Out was launched by The Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) in 2021, and aims to encourage individuals and businesses across the UK to brave one night of discomfort in solidarity with former Armed Forces personnel struggling with housing issues.
All the money raised goes toward helping the RBL continue its work providing safe accommodation, employment opportunities, and welfare support to thousands of veterans every year. In total, the team raised £2,420 for the charity.
Among the 11 members of staff from Barratt and David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties who took part in the challenge were Managing Director Tom Wright and Sales Director Will Phair.
Tom Wright, Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties, said: “We are incredibly proud to have taken part in the Great Tommy Sleep Out and to do our bit for the veterans who have given so much for us all.
“Spending just one night outside was a small challenge for us, but it highlighted the daily struggles that too many ex-service personnel face. Supporting organisations like the Royal British Legion is vital, and we are pleased to have played a part in raising both awareness and much-needed funds.”
Barratt Redrow, the parent company of Barratt and David Wilson Homes, is one of the leading sponsors for the Great Tommy Sleep Out.
The RBL, established in 1921, is the UK’s leading Armed Forces charity, offering lifelong support to serving and ex-serving personnel and their families.
The charity is best known for the annual Poppy Appeal but works year-round to provide financial, emotional, and practical assistance to veterans and their loved ones.
