ACL Essex is supporting Neurodiversity Celebration Week (17-23 March), a time dedicated to embracing and celebrating the diverse ways our brains work.
Sharron Howard, Curriculum Lead, captures the essence of neurodiversity: “We’re all physically different, so why can’t we be neurologically different? This simple yet profound question encourages us to embrace the unique ways our brain’s function and to celebrate these differences.”
Neurodiversity refers to the concept that neurological differences, such as Dyslexia, DCD (Dyspraxia), Dyscalculia, Autism, and ADHD, are natural variations of the human brain. Approximately 15-20% of the population has a neurological difference. Instead of viewing these differences as deficits or disorders, ACL Essex takes a balanced view of an individual’s unique strengths and challenges. As Sharron Howard explains: “I don’t see Neurodivergence as a disability. People are not disabled by their neurodivergence, they are empowered by it.”
At ACL Essex, the team are passionate about focusing on what individuals can do rather than what they can’t. This shift in thinking allows Sharron and her team to recognise the talents and potential of neurodivergent individuals, creating a more inclusive society that values their contributions.
ACL Essex also works with local employers to gain neurodivergent individuals jobs in the workplace. Sharon says: “Employers are now seeing the positives of having a neurodivergent employee. They will be the most devoted hard-working member of staff, whatever their specialist interest is.”
By highlighting the value and skills that neurodivergent individuals bring to the workplace, ACL Essex encourages more employers to embrace neurodiversity and create environments where everyone can thrive. ACL Essex offers employability courses for those seeking employment in retail, hospitality and gardening amongst others.
ACL Essex is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone is valued for their unique abilities.
