This February half-term, take your family on a ‘Roman Holiday’ at Colchester Castle, one of the region’s most iconic historic sites. Packed with exciting activities, interactive experiences, and family-friendly events, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
From 17-21 February, the Armoury opens its doors for a hands-on history experience. Visitors can handle Roman and Medieval weaponry, including replica swords and blades, and learn about their craftsmanship. This engaging activity is free with Castle admission, making it an exciting addition to your visit.
For a more immersive historical experience, families can join a Reeking Romans Family Tour. Taking place daily, from 17 to 21 February at 11am, these 40-minute sensory tours bring the Roman Gods to life through touch, smell, and storytelling. Tickets are just £3.50 per person, after the cost of Castle admission.
Continuing the Roman Gods theme, pick up a trail sheet from the 15-23 February, where you’ll journey through the Castle to uncover the myths and secrets of Roman deities. Each trail costs £5 and includes a prize upon completion!
But for a truly unforgettable experience, Knightzzz at the Museum on 15th February offers families a chance to spend the night at the Castle, enjoy themed activities, and explore the museum after dark. Are you brave enough to stay the night?
During half term the stunning Hollytrees Museum will also be open. On 18 February, the museum will host free creature craft sessions for younger visitors which you will not want to miss.
Cllr Natalie Sommers, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Heritage and Public Protection said: “We’re thrilled to offer such a variety of activities for families this February half-term. From hands-on history to interactive trails and even a magical sleepover, there’s something for everyone to enjoy while exploring Colchester’s incredible heritage.”
