47 year old Hawkwell resident, Ben Weir says he has much to thank the Fusion Sporting Academy for, in his journey to achieving British Championship success.

Ben joined the Academy in 2023, when he initially qualified to represent the British Triathlon Age-Group team and secured a top 10 finish at the European Championships held in Belgium. As a member of the Sporting Academy, Ben was offered full access to the swimming and gym facilities at Fusion’s Clements Hall and Southend Leisure and Tennis Leisure Centres, which have allowed him to train in the perfect environment to take his racing up another level.

Ben had always been a keen mountain biker but only began competing as a Triathlete at the age of 40. After undergoing surgery, he was advised not to cycle for a few months and swimming was prescribed as part of his rehabilitation. During his rehab from surgery, both swimming and ParkRun had become part of his weekly routine and when he eventually recovered, he was inspired by watching others compete in his local triathlon event in Southend-on-Sea and signed up for the following year.

Success quickly followed, with Ben finishing 2nd in his age category at the 2024 British Middle Distance Triathlon Championships and securing a third successive British Triathlon team selection for the European Championships to be held in Pamplona, Spain in 2025.

Ben says “having access to such great facilities through the Fusion Sporting Academy has enabled me to train in a structured manner and in a well maintained and supportive environment. Fusion’s centre managers have always been so supportive of me and the other Fusion Ambassadors – providing us with access to the facilities whenever we needed them. My goal is to continue improving and representing Great Britain at amateur level for many years to come.
