A social care professional from Chelmsford is sharing her experiences of working in care.
Julie Dechamps is a self-employed social care professional. Julie joined the care sector in 2020 after a career mainly based in an office.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Julie was furloughed from her previous role. She started volunteering with the elderly in her community. Julie found her passion for caring for others and decided to pursue a career in care.
Julie began working for the Royal Voluntary Service as an NHS Responder. She also volunteered for Chelmsford CVS and Essex Welfare Service. Julie then went on to set up Gemini Support.
Gemini Support offers home care services in Chelmsford and surrounding areas of Essex.
Julie said: “My job is very rewarding, and it’s amazing to see the impact it has on everyone that I support. Appreciation and thanks are nice. But seeing the impact on clients is the best feedback I could ask for.
“My advice for anyone considering a career in care would be to go for it! It’s the most fulfilling job I’ve ever had.”
Throughout her role, Julie supports clients in a variety of ways. This includes helping at home, supporting with mealtimes, and providing companionship. She also takes clients on day trips to museums, out for lunch, shopping and more.
Julie continued: “I feel like I make a difference every day, but one particular time stands out. I have two clients who are close friends, but due to health reasons hadn’t seen each other for a long time.
“I drove one of them to the other’s house to give them the opportunity to catch up. While it may seem like something simple, the joy and happiness that I witnessed was very moving.”
Councillor John Spence, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Integration at Essex County Council said: “In talking about her experiences, Julie has expressed far more eloquently than I could just how rewarding a career in care can be. Her experience speaks volumes: of the fulfilment and job satisfaction; the ability to make a real difference to the lives of the people you support.
“Whether it’s working in a team, independently, in a care setting or in people’s own homes, there are a range of roles open across the county.
“Day in, day out, extraordinary people are doing extraordinary things, to help others lead ordinary lives. You can join them by applying now for a rewarding future and a career you’ll be proud of.”
There are opportunities for people of all ages within the care sector. Roles are open to those starting their career, who already have experience or are looking for a career change.
