Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon & East Thurrock, recently met with Thurrock District Commander, Tony Atkin, to discuss car crime, anti-social behaviour, wildlife crime and how the police can increase community cohesion.
Overall, car crime is down by 20% and Essex Police’s Stolen Vehicle Intelligence Unit is having success in catching criminals, returning cars and preventing future thefts. Equally, anti-social behaviour is down by 30% year-on-year and officers are working to reduce it further.
Stephen also brought up the issue of wildlife crime, having been contacted by constituents who were concerned about people using catapults to target birds and other wild animals. The District Commander indicated that the RSPCA were ready to act if crimes of such a nature were reported to them.
Finally, Stephen discussed community cohesion and how Essex Police is working to increase the public’s confidence. To this end, there are regularly meetings to ‘have a cuppa with a copper’ which are advertised on Facebook. There is also a weekly Dispatch newsletter which all residents can receive by email. Most importantly, the District Commander stressed the importance of contacting the police when you see a crime.
