The two-year ASPIRE Programme by Barratt and David Wilson Homes offers graduates from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to explore various facets of the business while honing their own talents.
From Land and Planning, Technical, Commercial, Construction, Sales and Marketing to Finance and Supporting Barratt Developments, participants are challenged and encouraged to make the most of this intensive learning experience.
Currently stationed in the Construction department as part of an eight-week rotation, Amelia is demonstrating her skills and enthusiasm. Having already completed successful stints in multiple departments, her adaptability and capabilities within the company are evident.
For Learning at Work Week (13th to 19th May), Amelia is highlighting her experience so far on the programme and how it has enabled her to learn new skills on the go.
Amelia said: “I have grown up around the industry, as both my grandfather and father are involved in housebuilding. I decided during my work experience week at school that I wanted to work in Land and Planning however, after a further two weeks experience onsite and working onsite for a small housebuilder, I realised that site life was for me.
“My interest and knowledge grew, taking me to Nottingham Trent University, where I completed a degree in Property Development and Planning. I was particularly set on working for Barratt and David Wilson Homes due to the company’s reputation, the ASPIRE Programme available, and its history as a five-star housebuilder combined with the large number of Pride in the Job Awards won by site managers.
Amelia was particularly drawn to the graduate scheme for its two-month rotations across departments, providing a comprehensive understanding of the business. Additionally, she valued the support system, opportunities for focused development, and involvement in impactful initiatives like the Million Makers project for The Prince’s Trust.
Looking forward, Amelia envisions herself working to become an Assistant Site Manager role upon completing the ASPIRE Programme, and aims for further progression within the company.
Reflecting on her journey so far, she added: “I have already gained so much from the rotations I have experienced so far, and I am only halfway through.
“I now have a deeper understand of each department and their role, it has also been interesting to discover the link between them and the way in which they interact to achieve the end goal.”
Offering her advice to like-minded graduates looking to pursue a career in construction, Amelia said: “Working for Barratt and David Wilson Homes has expanded my knowledge. I’ve gained confidence within the industry, and started the career I have dreamed of all whilst meeting amazing people and having the opportunity to attend a number of conferences and events.
“The opportunities I’ve been given and the support from colleagues has been fantastic, which has allowed me to learn and grow as an individual.”
Tom Wright, Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties, said: “We are incredibly proud of Amelia’s achievements and her dedication to personal and professional development.
