Funding secured through Active Travel England’s Capability and Ambition Fund.
More than £1.05 million has been secured by Essex County Council to engage with residents on sustainable transport choices.
The council has been allocated £1,076,397 via Active Travel England’s Capability and Ambition Fund.
This will be used to work with communities, designing new walking and cycle routes, engaging with schools, and collecting data and evidence to understand what infrastructure is needed in Essex.
The funding is likely to be used to extend existing county-wide projects such as:
Performance in Education, an interactive show from a theatre group about air quality and emissions for Year 6 pupils
to engage with residents on the council’s new cycling strategy, ensuring it meets residents’ needs
collecting data on young people’s travel preferences to better inform the design of Essex’s future network
Councillor Tom Cunningham, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, Infrastructure and Sustainable Transport, said: “We welcome the continued commitment by Active Travel England to help us engage better with residents on sustainable transport.
“Residents tell us they want choice, and safer spaces to walk and cycle, so we will be using this funding to design-in choice and reduce the pressure on our congested road networks.
“Everyone, regardless of age or ability, has the right to a safer and healthier way to travel and this means we need to think differently about the way we travel.
“We know we have to do it in a way which communities understand and support and that is why engagement with residents in Essex is so important.”
