Becca Houghton, a SEND teacher at Chatten Free School in Witham, was part of a team of four skydivers who have raised almost £5,000 for Variety, the Children’s Charity and the Big Sing Soul.
The skydive took place at Beccles Airfield in Norfolk and was organised by Variety, the Children’s Charity and the Big Sing Soul – an Essex branch of the Big Sing choir as seen on Britain’s Got Talent.
Variety, the Children’s Charity provides practical help to disabled and disadvantaged children and young people throughout the UK. They supply grants for wheelchairs, specialist equipment, experiences on their Variety Great Days Out, and fully accessible transport for SEND schools and non-profit organisations in the form of their famous Sunshine Coaches.
The Big Sing are a series of community choirs that aim to unite people through uplifting music and the joy of singing. The Big Sing Soul is a free daytime choir that is open to all and that champions inclusivity.
Four intrepid skydivers teamed up to raise money for the two charities, jumping from 13,000 feet in a tandem skydive. Becca, Mick, Sasha, and Donna have between them raised a total of £4872.50, which will be split evenly between the organisations.
Becca Houghton is a Special Educational Needs teacher at Chatten Free School in Witham, Essex. The school works with children and young people who are severely affected by autism and associated learning difficulties. She was keen to do the jump on behalf of two charities that champion inclusivity for all.
Challenge Events and Partnership Officer at Variety, the Children’s Charity, Sarah Phillips said: “What a fantastic day! It was brilliant to team with the Big Sing Soul for this skydiving event. I’m so proud of the whole team. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces as they overcame their nerves to have the experience of a lifetime.
“Thank you so much to the whole time for your incredible fundraising efforts and to the Big Sing Soul for partnering with us. We’re thrilled to be able to spread the message of inclusivity for all with such a fantastic group!”
