David Davis: Tories only have a 33% chance of General Election victory

CONSERVATIVES have “probably a two thirds chance of not winning” the next General Election, according to the former Brexit Secretary David Davis.

He told GB News: “I think we have a modest chance, I wouldn’t say it’s a majority I’d say it’s probably a two thirds chance of us not winning, half of it Labour winning it, half of it, and no overall control and a hung Parliament as perhaps a third chance.”

Asked if the current state of the party is similar to that before the 1997 General Election loss, the MP said: “It’s pretty stormy but, no, it’s manageable…

“I wouldn’t worry too much about the by-elections. They’ll be embarrassing, difficult, they’ll cause problems.

“It’s very hard to tell. I don’t think they indicate much really, they’re sort of demonstration battlefields but they’re not real predictors of outcomes, never have been.”

Mr Davis said the fate of the Tories is likely to depend on tax cuts: “I’m a low tax Tory. I would prefer a lower tax strategy.

“I’m hoping this autumn we’re going to have an Autumn Budget and the beginnings of a reduction in taxes. We need Rishi more now than ever because of all that turmoil.”

He also revealed that he would be voting on Monday to support the conclusions of the Commons Privileges committee which led to the resignation of Boris Johnson.

Mr Davis said: “If there’s a vote, I will vote to support the committee and the reason for that is I’ve actually read the report.”
