A brand-new public event will be racing to Colchester’s high street this Summer with the Colchester Soapbox Rally.
Our Colchester Business Improvement District (BID) are behind the project aiming to bring thousands of visitors to the high street to enjoy the spectacular race day. Soapbox races are a unique event focused on Soapbox karts; non motorised, handmade, and decorated vehicles, going head-to-head in time trials. The 300m racetrack will be on the high street with time trials starting as early as 10am on the day.
Different free events will be happening throughout the day for spectators to enjoy. Including the time trails and stage areas where visitors can take a look at the karts prior to their racing and enjoy additional entertainment.
Entries will also be available for teams and Karts, giving you the opportunity to design and build your own Soapbox kart to race down the high street. Entries for karts will open in March.
The event will be taking place on Sunday 17th September 2023 with a road closure in place for the duration of the event. Head Street and North Hill will not have closures in place to ease traffic congestion.
Sam Good Manager of Our Colchester BID says “I’m really excited to be bringing the Colchester Soapbox Rally to the high street. I’ve attended others in the region, and it always brings a big buzz of fun and energy along with it. Ramps and obstacles will be set up along the course for the racers to navigate and the public will get a great show!
As this is the first year of the Colchester Soap Box Rally the entry fee for teams taking part is quite low so we encourage as many people as possible to take part and give it a go. Entries are also open for businesses if they want to create a team kart.”
Nancy Foster Store Director at Fenwick says “The Fenwick team are excited to welcome Colchester Soapbox Rally to the high street this summer. Thriving city centres benefit from events such as this by attracting visitors to the city centre and have a significant beneficial economic impact on the surrounding area, both short and long term.”
Registration for karts will be available via the In Colchester website in March. Sign up to the In Colchester mailing list and follow In Colchester on social media to be the first to be notified when registration opens.
