The Crystal Maze LIVE Experience has today unveiled the UK’s first ever maize artwork, meticulously painted on tiny corn kernels, to celebrate the launch of the Maze’s brand-new game, the Keys of Centeotl.
Painted by Devonshire based artist, Bronwyn Royce, the unique artwork has been commissioned to mark the launch of the new game, which takes its name from the Aztec God of maize and corn. Measuring at just five millimetres by six millimetres and taking 54 hours to create, the miniature never seen before maize art highlights the key features of the Keys of Centeotl game.
The art was created under a magnifying glass using intricate techniques and a specialist paint brush that was modified to include just five hairs. The five tiny pieces of artwork include the Aztec God Centeotl, iconic 90s Crystal Maze host Richard O’Brien, the Crystal Dome and the Crystal Maze LIVE Experience logo. A set of keys has also been depicted – a fundamental element of the game to ensure players bag a crystal to guarantee time in the iconic dome.
The new game, which is an addition to the London attraction, was designed by Crystal Maze super-fan, Ian Hansford, from Kirton in Lindsey in Lincolnshire. Following thousands of entries, Ian’s Keys of Centeotl creation won a nationwide search to design a new game for the London attraction. The game challenges players to solve an equation, the answer of which allows them to identify the keys needed to unlock the all-important crystal.
Game creator, Ian, drew inspiration for his design from one of his favourite games in the original TV series from the 1990s, of which he was a massive fan. When asked how it felt to see his game come to life in the attraction Ian said, “It was such an honour to be chosen as the winner of the competition. I’ve always loved puzzles and my friends and I used to pretend that we were on the Crystal Maze TV show when we were younger. Back then my favourite zone was always the Aztec zone, so when designing my game, I knew that was where I wanted my game to be set. When I found out that there was an Aztec God of maize I knew that was the perfect character to base my game around. The God of maize in the Crystal Maze!”

Alongside the Keys of Centeotl, visitors to the Crystal Maze LIVE Experience in London will also be able to enjoy other new games such as ‘Wobbleboard’ which features the original board from the Channel 4 TV show, and ‘Crossword’ which will live in the Industrial Zone.
Visitors to the Manchester site will also get to enjoy a version of the Wobbleboard game which will be available to play from Saturday the 15th of January.
