The Land of the Fanns is a fascinating landscape which stretches from east London to south west Essex. It is full of rich environmental green spaces and interesting historical sites. The five-year Land of the Fanns Landscape Partnership Scheme aims to reconnect local people to this area, uncovering the landscape, strengthening local attachment to, and enjoyment of it. Now in its fourth year, the scheme’s projects are starting to offer significant opportunities for people across the area to learn more about the natural history and heritage of this often overlooked and undervalued landscape and the school travel fund is one such opportunity.
The Land of the Fanns Landscape Partnership Scheme can help fund the transport costs of schools for visits to environmental or heritage sites for educational visits. Trips to heritage and outdoor education sites can be very beneficial for children and young people, connecting students and staff with their local environment, offering an understanding of an area’s history and development, and helping to foster an appreciation and respect for the wildlife and natural world.
The area encompassed by the Land of the Fanns: Havering, Barking & Dagenham, Thurrock, Brentwood and South East Essex, has many fascinating places to visit for all ages from primary to secondary.
Schools within the Scheme’s area can apply for help towards transport costs for local heritage and outdoor educational visits through funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for KS1- 4. The fund is limited so early applications are advisable.
The fund covers travel costs only to sites but visits can be led by site staff or self-led. Activity costs are not met by this scheme and must be paid by the school. There are nine partners in the Land of the Fanns Landscape Partnership Scheme: Forestry England, Thames Estuary Partnership, Brentwood Borough Council, London Borough of Havering, London Borough of Barking & Dagenham, Thames21, Essex County Council and Thurrock Council. Thames Chase Trust is the lead partner in the project.
