This Thursday, hospital laboratory staff across the UK will be taking to social media to promote the vital role of biomedical science in healthcare and you can help them
IBMS), the professional body for biomedical scientists and laboratory support staff. It aims to inform the public and empower patients by telling them about practices in biomedical science, and celebrate a profession that is #AtTheHeartOfHealthcare.
In the UK, healthcare laboratories handle over 1 billion samples every year – a figure that does not include the millions of COVID-19 tests processed this year. During a global pandemic, it is particularly important that we all take a moment to celebrate our hospital laboratory staff – because of the incredible leaps of innovation, frontline risks and enduring hard work that has been typical across the board.
We encourage you to use the attached artwork and promote the following message this Thursday:
Today is #BiomedicalScienceDay2020 – so let’s say a big THANK YOU to the Biomedical Scientists, Clinical Scientists and laboratory staff #BehindEveryTest who work #AtTheHeartOfHealthcare analysing our samples!
In preparation for Biomedical Science Day 2020, the IBMS produced a short COVID-19 sample journey animation (samplejourney.com) that tells the story of Ewan, whose sample is analysed by Victoria, his virologist. The animation was developed with the aim of encouraging the general public to understand some of the complexities of COVID-19 testing and the skills of the biomedical scientists who are involved in analysing them. Please feel free to share it.
