An amazing action van is hitting the road as Essex & Suffolk Water officially launches a community outreach initiative in Essex.
The new vehicle, affectionately named Sandy, will be travelling the length and breadth of Essex & Suffolk Water’s operating area in Essex, with community engagement ambassadors Catherine and Mac.
They will attend a variety of community events across the area, to talk to customers about smart meters, with more than 105,000 having been installed in Essex already.
Smart meters are the fairer way to pay, as customers only pay for the water they use, and they can keep a close eye on how much water they’re using, which also benefits the environment.
Mac and Catherine will also be able to support customers in other areas including water efficiency, bills, priority service support and anything else they need help with.
Jade Simmonds, Customer Experience Lead for the Smart Metering Programme, said: “It’s the perfect opportunity – if you are out and about and see the bright blue colours of Sandy, then please come and say hi to Mac and Catherine.
“We’re thrilled to be able to introduce Sandy to our customers and be able to provide a presence at community events to advise, inform and educate our customers. We wanted a way that we could easily access all our communities and have everything we needed to hand and Sandy does just that.
“There’s a lot of work and a lot of investment happening to the water network in Essex, and we want to tell our customers about that work, whilst answering any questions they have about anything water related.”
The first official public event will be at The Museum of Power in Langford, on Sunday 6 April, followed by an Anti-Slavery event in Chelmsford Town Centre on Monday 7 April.

The vehicle was called Sandy following a competition amongst colleagues to suggest possible names, the vehicle is named after Sandon Valley House, the location of our second largest reservoir in Essex and is the follow-up to Carlton, the vehicle based in Suffolk in April 2024.
Carlton has achieved fantastic results in Suffolk and is becoming more famous as the third member of the community engagement team alongside ambassadors Julie and Sophie.
