Celebrating 50 Years of Compassionate Housing: Hamilton Court and the Masonic Housing Association

As we mark the 50th anniversary of the Masonic Housing Association (MHA), Ken Turner, Secretary of the Hamilton Court Charitable Association, reflects on the journey that has provided countless individuals with safe and supportive housing over the past five decades.
“Fifty years ago, in June, I married my lovely wife, Sue. If anyone understands what 50 years feels like, I do. Coincidentally, the Masonic Housing Association was formed in the same year, setting out on a journey of its own, one with a mission quite different from ours, yet equally dedicated to care and commitment,” Ken shares.
Founded in 1975 as an exempt charity, the MHA took advantage of new opportunities provided by the Housing Act 1974 to build and manage sheltered housing schemes for the elderly. Supported in part by government grants, the association ensured that housing was available not only to Freemasons and their dependents but also to other individuals in need. Over the years, the MHA’s network has expanded, now encompassing five housing schemes across the country, including locations in Wellingborough, Aylesbury, Stratford-upon-Avon, Rugeley, and, of course, Essex’s own Hamilton Court.
Hamilton Court, located in the heart of South Woodham Ferrers, provides assisted living accommodation in 43 self-contained one-bedroom flats, 12 of which are designed for couples. Managed by a dedicated committee of volunteers, the scheme goes beyond providing housing—it fosters a genuine community.
“Supported by Essex Freemasons, our committee members bring a diverse set of skills to ensure the building runs efficiently and safely while also supporting a vibrant social life for our residents,” Ken explains. “From summer BBQs and festive gatherings to day trips and Sunday lunches at Saxon Hall, we create an environment that encourages engagement, companionship, and a true sense of belonging.”
Hamilton Court’s residents come from all walks of life, each with their own story and reasons for seeking sheltered accommodation. Some face financial difficulties, while others seek comfort and security following the loss of a loved one. The resident Scheme Manager plays a crucial role in assisting with benefit applications and navigating complex bureaucratic processes, ensuring that those in need receive the support they deserve.
“Hamilton Court is more than just a roof over someone’s head, it’s a place of friendship, compassion, and reassurance. Whether residents need someone to talk to, a safe environment, or help in difficult times, we are here for them,” says Ken. “Throughout the week, our Scheme Manager is on hand to provide support, and on weekends, a Committee Member is always available to step in should any issues arise.”
As the Masonic Housing Association celebrates 50 years of providing quality sheltered housing, Hamilton Court remains a shining example of its mission. The commitment to ensuring a secure and fulfilling life for residents continues to drive the association forward.
“What began as an idea fifty years ago has evolved into a lifeline for many. The MHA has created a network of homes that have provided sanctuary and support for so many—and long may it continue,” Ken concluded.
