‘Recognising your Rights’ is the new theme for Carers Rights Day, which will take place on Thursday 21st November 2024.
Carers Rights Day is an initiative organised by Carers UK which aims to raise awareness of the rights of the 5.8 million unpaid carers in the UK currently caring for an ill, elderly or disabled relative or friend.
Every day 12,000 people become unpaid carers. The economic value of the care they provide in England and Wales is £162 billion a year, the equivalent of a second NHS, but many face huge challenges as a result of their caring role.
It takes an average of two years for someone to identify as a carer and during this time carers, who often struggle with finances, their mental and physical health, as well as juggling work and care, can miss out on vital support.
Carers Rights Day, set up and run by Carers UK, aims to help carers to understand their rights and get the recognition they deserve. To help carers recognise their rights, Carers UK will be providing expert information and advice and sharing guidance on the key places to go to get the support they need.
Carers UK is also encouraging individuals and organisations to share the date for Carers Rights Day and plan events and activities to help carers in their local community.

“Becoming a carer can be life-changing. Many carers find that it has a devastating impact on their finances, employment opportunities, and health and wellbeing.
“Caring is often all-consuming, and it can be difficult to see what support you are entitled to as an unpaid carer. This Carers Rights Day we want carers to feel confident asking for the help they need and ensure that they can challenge instances when their rights are not being met.
“Too many carers are struggling without support. Carers Rights Day is a crucial opportunity to raise awareness and to make sure carers know they are not forgotten or alone.”
