Today, multi-million selling singer songwriter Pixie Lott releases Midnight Trash, the second single from her fourth studio album, Encino, out 27th September. The brand-new track can be listened to here.
Midnight Trash is a soul track so instantly anthemic, you may not immediately register the tough subject that inspired it. “It’s about breaking up with insomnia,” she explains of the song she penned with her former collaborator Pete Zizzo and co-produced by Thomas Mitchener. “At the time I couldn’t sleep with anxiety, my chest was so tight. It sounds like it’s a break-up song but it’s actually positive. I am so excited that this is my second single from Encino! The other great thing about Midnight Trash is that Bertie is playing on the track. He plays the shaker and is credited on the album for that, so I’m a very proud mama! I’m just so happy for it to be released into the world.”
Midnight Trash is the follow up to Somebody’s Daughter which saw Pixie turn her pen towards toxic online behaviour and bullying. The song was named Record of the Week and stayed on the Radio 2 A-List for 5 weeks. Pixie will also be performing at Radio 2 In The Park in Preston next month. Pixie performed or previewed the song on BBC’s The One Show, Good Morning Britain, Sunday Morning Live, ITV News, Channel 5 News and the Chris McCausland show. Following the success of the radio, TV’s and her sold out show, where she performed her new album with her incredible live band, she has been booked on several high-profile festivals and shows to be announced soon.
Encino is packed full of autobiographical songs of romance, family and nostalgia, and the 13-track album sees Pixie taking control of her career for the first time. Every track is co-written by the pop star, and she delved deeper than ever before to open up and pour every emotion into these songs. Encino started life as a passion project for Pixie but swiftly became far more important than that and she knew this was the record she’d always wanted to make. Feeling authentically her, and leaning on influences such as Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchell, Joe Cocker and Paul Simon, Encino is the perfect evolution from her debut 15 years ago. Speaking of the album, Pixie adds: “I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since my last album, but I’m so excited to be back doing what I love the most. I’m taking risks this time. Previously, I’ve gone in the direction others have envisioned for me but nobody really ever pushed me to try the things I wanted. It’s scary but I’m going with my heart now – I want to show other sides of myself. I’ve always wanted to do something with a timeless, classic sound that could be played at any point in time.”
Playing live has always been one of Pixie’s favourite things to do and she cannot wait to be back on the road touring with her phenomenal live band. Fans were able to preview the record at an intimate sold out show at London’s Hoxton Hall, earlier this summer – see recap here. Pixie played with a six-piece band, with a set that included some of her hits from the first 3 albums but with a raw, fresh take to sit alongside her new music.
Since selling 1.6 million copies of her 2009 debut album Turn It Up, Pixie has notched up three UK No.1 tracks, sold in excess of four million singles, secured four BRIT nominations, won 2 MTV EMA Awards, all while collaborating with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Pusha T, Jason Derulo and Lionel Richie. Elsewhere, she has fronted campaigns for Dolce & Gabbana, performed at Fendi’s Paris Fashion Week, judged The Voice Kids (coaching four winners to victory!), appeared as a guest judge on The X Factor and more.
A rare quadruple threat – singer, songwriter, actress and dancer – Pixie has various other projects in the works. This year she started filming Christmas Karma where she is part of an all star cast including Eva Longoria, Hugh Bonneville, Charithra Chandran, Billy Porter and Boy George to name a few. She also recently starred in the new series of ITV crime drama McDonald and Dodds and took the leading role in Made In Dagenham for a special one-off sold out performance at London’s Palladium.
