A youth band that offers children the chance to learn to play an instrument and read music for weekly subs of just £1 has been given a welcome donation by Bellway Essex.
Brentwood Imperial Youth Band, which meets twice a week at The Band Room in Great Warley and has more than 100 members, received £200 from the housebuilder, which has its regional head office in nearby Chelmsford.
Band Director Johnpaul Wyndham said: “The donation from Bellway was a wonderful surprise to receive in the post and makes us feel blessed to be recognised by a national company supporting the youth work that we do. The more society invest in young people, whether with money or time, will only make for a better future for all.
“The Brentwood Imperial Youth Band was formed in 1990 and its objective remains the same today as it did 34 years ago – to provide local young people with an opportunity to develop their musical skills and have fun in a safe environment.
“The band welcomes any young person and aims to unlock their music ability as well as teach them skills that build the foundation for success in later life.
“Membership is still what it was in 1990, just £1 per week. Bellway’s donation will help enable us to keep that £1 per week and also put towards other outgoings whether new uniforms or instruments. Thank you to Bellway on behalf of the Band members and trustees.”
Brentwood Imperial Youth Band is a registered charity and comprises boys and girls aged from 10 who perform as both a marching band and a concert band at domestic and international events throughout the year.
There are no requirements for musical proficiency, experience or instrument ownership for members when they join, and the adult organisers and teaching staff are all unpaid volunteers.
In 2022 the band received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
The band’s operating costs are financed by fundraising activities, which include donations received for performances, weekly membership fees, and contributions from parents and other organisations.
The donation from Bellway Essex was organised by the division’s Customer Care Manager Gillian Goodacre, whose son is a member of the band.

“To be able to learn to play an instrument and perform is just part of it. The young people build essential life skills, gain confidence and have fun – not to mention the mental and physical benefits of being in a marching band.
“So, we were pleased to support the band with this donation to help with their expenses.”
Bellway Essex is building new homes across Essex, as well as in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.
