Taylor Wimpey welcomed officials from a Maldon youth football club to mark the ‘topping out’ of a new sports pavilion being built for the club and the community.

The housebuilder and contractor Bakers of Danbury are constructing the pavilion at the Handley Gardens development, on the southern side of the town. Once complete, the facility will become home to Maldon Saints YFC, a community club with over 250 members.

Club officials visited the site on Wednesday 12th June to see the progress on the building, which will be known as the Limebrook Sports Pavilion, and sign part of the steel structure. The facility is due to be completed and handed over by September this year, in time for the 2024/25 football season.

Michael O’Leary, Regional Operations and Sales Director at Taylor Wimpey London said: “We aim to build communities where people feel like they belong, and sports clubs and other organisations can play a huge part in that process. We’re really excited that Maldon Saints will be moving into Handley Gardens this year and we hope that the new pavilion helps them to become an even bigger part of the Maldon community.”

Simon Gray, Chairman of Maldon Saints YFC, said: “We are very proud and excited to be taking ownership of the Limebrook Sports Pavilion and we are looking forward to ensuring as many of the children and players get to use the facility over the coming years.

“As Chairman, I am also extremely excited that this facility will enable the club to grow stronger and expand throughout the locality. We are very grateful to Taylor Wimpey and to Maldon District Council without whom this opportunity wouldn’t have existed.”

Mark Howlett, Commercial Director for Bakers of Danbury, said: “We are very pleased to have been involved in the construction of the sports pavilion at Handley Gardens over the last year. The high-quality facilities are a testament to the cooperation between Bakers of Danbury, the Maldon Saints committee and Taylor Wimpey.

“All of those involved in its construction from the planning phase through to the finishing trades now on site should be rightly proud of the modern, energy efficient building that is being delivered. Not only will the new building provide a fantastic new home for the club but will also serve the community around Maldon for years to come.”

Handley Gardens launched in 2019 and will eventually comprise 648 homes along with a range of community facilities, including the sports pavilion, a primary school, shops, public open spaces, a multi-surface play area and allotments. The fourth phase of homes is currently on sale.
