McVitie’s has revealed the top 10 Penguin biscuit jokes of all time – with the nation’s favourites read to London Zoo’s Humboldt penguins ahead of World Penguin Day.

The British public were asked to vote for their favourite punny Penguin biscuit one-liners – as seen on the back of the beloved snack – with a good old-fashioned pun taking the biscuit.

Put to a poll of 2,000 adult Brits, the nation’s favourite Penguin biscuit joke has been revealed as: ‘What was the name of the Emperor Penguin? Julius Freezer’

The nation’s top 10 Penguin biscuit jokes:

What was the name of the Emperor Penguin? Julius Freezer
Why can’t penguins fly? Because they are chocolate biscuits
Why do penguins wear glasses? To help their ice-sight!
What do you call 500 penguins in Trafalgar Square? Lost
Why can’t penguins play football? Because there’s snowball
How does a penguin build its house? Igloos it together!
How do penguins get around? On a b-icicle
What’s black, white, and red all over? A sunburnt penguin
Why do penguins stay in pairs? Freezer crowd
Why are penguins good racing car drivers? Because they are always in pole position
A snack time staple, Penguin biscuits have graced lunchboxes since their launch in 1932 – with 9 in 10 (91%) adult Brits stating that the nostalgic treat reminds them of their younger years, while almost three quarters (73%) recall reading Penguin jokes with friends.

The research also found that nearly three quarters (73%) of those polled say they read the joke every time they eat a Penguin, with 92% saying they make them smile.

While it’s no surprise that 7 in 10 Brits agree the biscuit itself is the best part of a Penguin, a quarter (23%) of us are there for the joke!

The Humboldt penguins at the iconic London Zoo’s Penguin Beach were spotted having a brrr-illiant World Penguin Day this year as zookeepers treated the waddle to the nation’s favourite Penguin biscuit jokes. As well as the hilarious one-liners, you will also now find a penguin fun fact on every Penguin bar provided by ZSL experts.

Adam Woolf, Marketing Director at McVitie’s, said: “Penguin biscuits, and their famous one-liner jokes, have been putting a smile on the faces of families for decades. What better way to celebrate them this World Penguin Day than with our proud partners ZSL – who are working across the world to protect animals just like Humboldt penguins.”

In addition to marking World Penguin Day, the adorable comedy gig also comes as a celebration of the partnership between McVitie’s Penguin and international conservation charity ZSL (Zoological Society of London). The exciting new partnership, launched in 2023, supports McVitie’s aim to connect more families with wildlife and hopes to inspire more children to care for the planet, while also helping to fund ZSL’s vital work.
