Dog dumped in barbed wire now on the mend after RSPCA rescue

A dog who was dumped over a wall into barbed wire is getting lots of TLC after being rescued by the RSPCA and London Fire Brigade.

The terrier-type dog was found on Monday (18 March) by a person walking in Levett Road, in Barking, East London. They heard a distressed dog on the other side of a 6ft-high (1.8m) concrete wall – and when they looked over, they could see the terrified dog entangled in barbed wire.

The dog was unknown to the homeowner, and the garden was enclosed – so the only feasible way the dog could have gotten in was by being dumped over the high wall from the street.

The RSPCA and a crew from Barking fire station attended to free the dog from the barbed wire. RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer Lee Ricketts said: “This small black and white terrier had long nails and missing patches of fur, and it was clear she had been neglected. She was so scared that she was cowering in the corner and seemed very nervous.

“The entire property was surrounded by a solid 6ft wall and the only way she could have entered the garden was to have been forcibly put there.”

Lee took her to the RSPCA’s Finsbury Park Animal Hospital, where staff immediately checked her over.

Lee said: “On arrival at the hospital, the dog was still very nervous and scared but after giving her a few treats she became a completely different dog and allowed me to carry her. She was clearly just terrified by what had happened to her and didn’t know whether to trust me. She had a scary ordeal, but the fire service were brilliant in helping to free her and I’m really grateful they attended.

“She had some small cuts from the barbed wire and soft tissue damage to her leg. She was also extremely dirty and had some fleas. She isn’t microchipped so we have no idea where she has come from.
“We’ve decided to call her Ladybird because of the distinctive black spots on her back. She is now doing well after having some pain relief, flea treatment and a much-needed bath.”
The RSPCA is appealing for anyone who saw the incident, or who recognises the dog, to get in touch by calling 0300 123 8018, quoting reference 01237423.
The incident took place on the corner of Levett Road and St Erkenwalds Church.
