Another council housing development has received planning approval as Harlow Council continues to speed up the delivery of phase one of its 103-home housebuilding programme.

At last Wednesday’s (6 December) Development Management Committee councillors approved planning applications for five new council homes as part of the conversion of the former Potter Street neighbourhood office. The disused office building, which forms part of the Potter Street Community Centre, will be converted into a one-bedroom flat and four two-bed flats.

Thirty-eight additional regular parking spaces and three electric vehicle charging points will be included in the development on a section of derelict land between Merrick Mead and Brenthall Towers which will also benefit the wider community with extra parking provision.

All the homes built will go to Harlow families on the Housing Needs Register. With planning approval given, work can now begin on the site with hoardings being erected this week.

Councillor Michael Hardware, cabinet portfolio holder for economic development, said:

“As we continue to deliver on our priority to rebuild our town, the projects we have started for phase one of our council housebuilding programme are now coming thick and fast and the Potter Street scheme is yet another step forward in our mission to provide more council homes for Harlow families.

“The council is not only rebuilding left-behind areas and providing much-needed housing, but also delivering enhancements the local neighbourhood that will all go towards restoring pride in Harlow. This development includes additional car parking for residents already living in the area.”
