A young rugby fan from Dunmow had a weekend she won’t ever forget after playing an important role during Rugby World Cup 2023, in France.

Iris, twelve, led Wales onto the pitch against Argentina in Marseille as a Defender of Tomorrow and Mascot ahead of the two teams battling it out at the Rugby World Cup quarter final on Saturday.

The inspiring youngster was awarded the role for her dedication to playing rugby and for campaigning for young girls to play sports, as she is currently the only girl at her school to captain the team.

In a video submission, Iris shared her story on campaigning for equality in her local school for girls and sports, as many aren’t taught how to play rugby. Rugby itself has taught her so many core values, especially around respect – and she has been a true inspiration for those girls around her.
96 children have been chosen from around the world by Defender, Worldwide Partner of Rugby World Cup 2023, for their dedication to making a difference to local communities.
Each exceptional hero will lead the teams as they walk out onto the pitch throughout the tournament in France.
