LABOUR will today outline plans to build new towns and make it easier to own a home, the party’s national campaign coordinator said.
Pat McFadden told GB News: “We are very keen on building more houses and making the dream of homeownership real for the next generation of people, because it’s become far too difficult.
“And what we’re talking about today is not just building new houses but building new communities. That’s why we’re talking about new towns.
“It’s not just about a place to live. It’s about a GP surgery, a primary school, the transport links, the businesses that make up a community. That’s what we’re talking about today. And that’s the kind of policy that’s going to be at the centre of Keir Starmer’s speech today.”
In a discussion during Breakfast with Eamonn Holmes and Isabel Webster, he continued: “We are clear that for Britain to become more prosperous, we’ve got to generate more wealth. Governments alone can’t do that.
“We work very closely with business, Keir Starmer, Rachel Reeves, myself, Johnny Reynolds, our business spokesperson, we want this to be a good country to invest in. It’s not been an attractive enough investment destination in recent years partly because of political chaos, no sense of a plan.
“What Keir will be setting out is a long term plan today for how we want to build the economy, how we want to generate that wealth because frankly, that’s the only way we’re going to be able to fund the public services that we need in the future.”
He added: “I think any government that gets elected doesn’t have to rip everything up that previous government has done, and you’ve got more devolution in England in recent years with the creation of mayors and combined authorities and so on. We think that that is working quite well.
“We want to build on it to pass more powers to local areas over things like planning over skills over local transport. There’s a good argument for doing this.”
