Adults with learning disabilities will be helped to tell their stories thanks to a cash donation from Persimmon Homes Essex.
The developer has donated £1,000 to Colchester Gateway Clubs, which hosts social clubs and workshops for adults with learning disabilities, after a successful bid through the Community Champions scheme.
The charity also provides an advocacy and support service for members, and their families, ensuring they have access to health services, financial support and social care.
Each week they support up to 150 people from the North East Essex area at venues across Colchester and Tendring.
The money will allow the charity to roll out the second phase of their StoryTellers course, giving members the opportunity to communicate through the medium of storytelling, whether that be the story of their life, or a fictional story they want to share.
Charity workers support members by helping them get their stories onto paper before they are shared with an audience, giving members a chance to communicate in a way they may not have been able to previously.
Louise Trail, Sales Director at Persimmon Essex, visited the charity’s ukulele group to meet some of the club members who are keen to join the next StoryTellers project and hand over the company’s donation.
She took the opportunity to find out more about some of the members, the team behind the club and the activities they offer.
Louise Trail, Sales Director at Persimmon Essex, said:
“Colchester Gateway Clubs provide an invaluable service for those with learning disabilities and it was an honour to see first-hand how their members benefit from the variety of activities on offer.
“Persimmon Homes Essex is proud to be able to support the work they do and ensure they can continue providing support and advocacy services for members and their families.
