New data from a survey commissioned by Tomb Raider: The LIVE Experience reveals 94% of people would watch an action film with a woman cast in the lead role, which shows high demand for female representation on screen. Crystal Dynamics has been leading this charge since 1996 with Tomb Raider’s famed archaeologist and adventurer, Lara Croft, who was polled by the UK as the most-iconic female hero in the gaming industry with 63% of votes, followed by Princess Peach (34%) and Princess Zelda (31%).
While only 6% of popular video games feature women protagonists as their main playable character[2], Tomb Raider: the LIVE Experience’s latest survey shows 42% of the nation wants to see women in lead roles, as opposed to being the hero’s sidekick. Lara Croft was also amongst the most-popular choices for cosplay because she is considered strong, intelligent, and brave. Wonder Woman and Catwoman came in alongside Lara as the top three most-popular choices.
To celebrate the Camden-based immersive experience’s first birthday, Tomb Raider’s leading lady took to London’s iconic Millennium Bridge to march alongside the nation’s favourite women heroes. Lara Croft is joined by female icons including Catwoman, Wonder Woman, Daenerys Targaryen, Princess Zelda, Princess Peach and Hermione Granger in a confident show of female solidarity.
Of those surveyed, one in three believe the characters they see in games, films and TV influence how they interact with others in their daily life, with 32% admitting they copy mannerisms from their favourite characters. One in five would like to see themselves represented more in on-screen woman heroes, naming representation of older demographics, the LGBT community and ethnic minority backgrounds as paramount.
