Celebrating Pride Month in Cambridge

0

With Pride Month rapidly approaching in June, there are plenty of celebrations that you can attend. Cambridge hosts one of these festivals, and it is an event to mark in your calendar.

A census in 2021 was the first to ask about gender identity and sexual identity, and the results highlighted the diversity across the UK. Cambridge has a high percentage of diversity with 10.27% of residents identifying as a different gender from their assigned gender at birth.

Cambridge Pride

Located on Jesus Green, Cambridge Pride is taking place on Saturday 17th June 2023. With thousands of people attending in 2022, more are predicted to descend on the city this year. If 2022’s event is anything to go by, there will be fabulous performers, live music and a range of different vendors at the event, so there is plenty for everyone.

If you are looking to attend, make sure you confirm your travel plans in advance. Booking a train journey ahead of time can work out cheaper for you and eliminate stress on the day. Cambridge station is a half-hour walk from Jesus Green so make sure your shoes are comfy too!

Groups and organisations

Cambridge is packed to the rafters with events outside of the main Pride event that you can attend. If you are going to be in town a few days before the Saturday shindig, then you could swing by The Blue Moon on Thursday 15th June. They are hosting NOW! That’s What I Call…DRAG! which promises to be a fun-filled evening of amazing lip-synching, live vocal performances and camp comedy. You will not want to miss out on this spectacular show.

If you are looking for something a bit tamer then you could check out the LGBTQ+ Board Games Social at Cambridge Central Library. Held on the last Saturday of each month, members are invited to bring their own games or choose one from the library’s collection. Starting at 3 pm, it is a great way to relax, make some new friends, and maybe get a little competitive too.

LGBTQ+ bars and venues

Whilst there are not many places that exclusively cater for the LGBTQ+ community, there are a few club nights and events that are organised specifically.

The Dot Cotton Club provides a safe space for people of all sexualities and genders as well as a great night out. Having been established over 25 years ago, you are guaranteed to enjoy yourself and dance the night away to a variety of classic songs.

Film screenings and festivals

Film fanatics among you will love the Queer in Shorts events, where short films themed around queer people from all over the world are shown. This group allows you to immerse yourself in the world that’s being created on the screen whilst finding something to relate to. Held monthly, this can be a great way to meet new friends and have discussions about the films you’ve seen.

However you are choosing to celebrate Pride, remember to stay safe and enjoy yourself!
