Our dogs are so much more than just pets, to most of us they are our family, which is why we invest so much time in keeping them happy and healthy. The joints and coat are particularly important indicators of a dog’s health, with both playing an important part within any dog’s day-to-day life.
To help ensure that your dog’s joints and coat are as healthy as can be, Sara Rowley, Senior Nutritionist at Butcher’s Nourishing Food For Dogs has shared some helpful tips.
How to spot the signs of unhealthy joints and coats?
“If your dog is in good health, their mobility should be strong, with their ability to walk and run being comfortable. If you notice that your dog is in any discomfort whilst moving, this may be a sign that they have joint issues.
“A dog’s coat should be shiny, soft, and smooth, this is even the case for dogs that have a rougher textured coat. Their skin shouldn’t be dry, itchy or red as this can be an indication that their skin is irritated from an underlying problem.”
What affects the health of joints and coats?
“There can be many reasons as to why your dog’s joint and coat health is not as it should be, however most of the time it is completely treatable, or at the very least, can be effectively managed with correct treatment. Just like humans, as dogs age, it is completely natural for their joints to begin to wear down. However, it is often the case that dogs can develop osteoarthritis, which affects 20% of the UK’s dog population*. If your dog is overweight, it is more likely to affect them due to greater pressure on their joints, however general wear and tear can happen at any point of your dog’s life, but becoming more prevalent in their senior years.
“Regarding skin, there are a number of factors which can cause issues. Like us, dogs can have allergies which may cause rashes and itching. This along with diet, weight and age can all play a part in causing skin problems. It is especially important to treat damaged skin, as not doing so makes it more vulnerable to infections caused by bacteria.”
Tips for supporting joints and coats
“To keep your dog’s coat looking and feeling healthy, it is essential to keep up its maintenance. By regularly brushing and washing the hair, the coat will be free from grease and any loose hair will be removed.
“A healthy and well-balanced diet is key to any dog’s general health, including joint and coat health. Ingredients such as Omega 3 and essential vitamins & minerals are fundamental for a well-balanced diet. Butcher’s Nourishing Food For Dogs Joints & Coat recipes are Vet recommended and help maintain a dog’s health and wellbeing. Each tin or foil tray contains exactly the right amount of Omega 3, Zinc, Biotin, Glucosamine and Chondroitin to help support joint, skin and coat health.”
