How to pick your next holiday destination

When it comes to choosing your next holiday destination, the world is quite literally your oyster. And with so many possibilities, it can become a little overwhelming. If this sounds like you, you can take comfort in the fact that you’re absolutely not alone!

But you’re in luck. By considering your budget, what kind of holiday you’re after and different modes of transport, you’ll find that the decision becomes easier.

Consider the time you can spend there

Often, the length of your holiday determines how far away you can go. After all, you’re not going to fly to Australia for one week! If you have limited time, consider European destinations that can be accessed by car, train or plane.

When planning your trip, always take the travel time into account too. If you’re flying abroad, you pretty much need an entire day to get there if you count in the journey to and from the airport. The same goes for coming back. So, if you have a week off, you’re realistically only going to have 5 full days at your destination.

Consider the Local laws and Culture

Holiday destinations can provide us with a great range of different experiences, cultures and views of the world that you might not be able to see at home. Unfortunately however this can be a double edged sword, with some locations having cultural practices or laws which might cause friction with living your own life. Alex who runs a  LGBTQ+ Flags store points out that popular holiday destinations such as Dubai can be difficult to travel if you’re queer, likewise many other Middle Eastern locations can require women to adjust their types of dress to meet standards of modesty dissimilar to what may be common in the West. So determine whether the local rules and customs may negatively impact your holiday

Consider your budget

In the case of budget, longer distances don’t always mean that you have to shell out more. Indeed, you can get reasonably priced flights to Southeast Asia and enjoy a very cheap lifestyle whilst you’re out there. The opposite is often true in Europe where flights are cheap, but accommodation and food are quite expensive.

So, just because you have a smaller budget doesn’t mean you have to stay local. Research flights or train tickets in advance and see if you can get a good deal!

Consider different modes of transport

Whilst many of us fly to destinations around the world, there are also other ways to travel that offer something really unique. Cruises from Southampton are a great option if you’re looking for something lowkey and relaxed without all the stress of flying.

With a cruise, you can sit back and let the boat do all the work. Many cruises offer multiple destinations and professional guides; this is great if you want to see many places in one trip.

Consider what kind of trip you want

The kind of trip you want also dictates where you end up, and everyone has different reasons for travelling. If you’re more of a city person, Europe is a good place to start. With so many historic capitals accessible by train or car, you could see a few cities in one trip.

For those who live for the thrill of adventure, you might want to head to mountainous terrains where you’ll find other like-minded travellers on hikes or in your hostel.
