In the space of just five singles, Overpass have become established as hometown heroes in Birmingham. The rising band have sold-out increasingly bigger venues in the city this year, taking them from two nights at The Sunflower Lounge to the O2 Institute2. They’ve also been making major waves elsewhere too, playing shows with The Wombats, The Snuts and The Twang, and landing airplay at BBC Introducing, Radio X and Amazing Radio.
The question is – how best to take their ascendant status to the next level? The answer comes with the news that Overpass have signed to rock ‘n’ roll tastemakers This Feeling Records – a deal that commences with today’s release of their new single ‘3AM’.
The timing is perfect as ‘3AM’ represents a huge step forward for the young band. Their anthemic, indie core is newly boosted by electrifying bursts of shoegaze guitar intensity, giving their huge hooks a brighter, atmospheric sheen. Max Newbold’s vocals have also dramatically matured, bringing a poise and nostalgia to lyrics which explore the time-honoured experience of dreaming that a crush will become something more. ‘3AM’ was produced by Alex Quinn (The Royston Club, Trudy and the Romance).
Overpass commented, “‘3AM’ is an innocent coming-of-age song that I think most people can relate to. It’s about the excitement you get when you’re going out, knowing you might be able to connect with that person, or at least hope that they will call you back when the night is over and done with.”
Overpass were formed in 2020 when four friends – Max Newbold (vocals/guitar), Elliot Rawlings (guitar), India Armstrong (bass) and Joe Gallagher (drums) – felt compelled to vent and to express their creativity post-lockdown. Sharing a love of indie both current (Inhaler, Sam Fender, Blossoms) and classic (Joy Division, Elastica), they debuted that same year with the self-released ‘One Night Lover’ single. They have since picked up wide-ranging streaming playlist support for their subsequent four singles, most recently ‘On Your Own’.
Overpass are currently most of the way through a UK headline tour which included a sold-out Coventry show at the HMV Empire. In addition to their remaining dates, they will start 2023 by co-headlining an Independent Venue Week tour with Tom A. Smith . Tickets for the dates, listed below, are available HERE.
