It’s time to call the fashion police, as nearly half (45%) of Brits confess they own items of clothing that have only ever seen the light of day once – with one in five (21%) of us owning up to six pieces that ultimately end up gathering dust.

According to new research, commissioned by Crystal Ski Holidays, occasionwear is the worst culprit, with wedding outfits (50%) topping the list of fits that we don’t rewear, with Christmas party styles (34%), and holiday wardrobe buys (34%) also high on the least worn list.

In fact, 43% admit they would never go on a holiday without buying at least one new item of clothing, with the average Brit spending £66 on holiday clothes that only get worn once.

This leads to 35 percent of us feeling guilty for impulse buying outfits for big occasions, and 30 percent of us say we’ve even turned down invites for a special event because of the risk of buying something that might get just one wear!

Nearly two-thirds (62%) admit they feel remorseful about the items they have languishing at the back of the wardrobe because of the damage fast fashion causes to the environment, with the younger generation having the strongest case of buyer’s remorse (79%).

So much so that over a quarter (26%) have opted to borrow items from family and friends to avoid making a one off purchase, while over a third (35%) would consider using a rental service instead to save money (37%), for the good of the planet (31%) or as way to enjoy having new outfits more frequently (22%).

To help combat this, and make ski wear more accessible and sustainable, Crystal has partnered with Lucy Mecklenburgh and Wes Nelson to launch The Ski Edit – a new rentable ski wear collection curated with “sustainability savvy” fashion rental service, By Rotation.

The collection has been curated to help alleviate some of the worries that arise when going on a ski holiday – such as being concerned you may not have the right gear, or the price – to offer a more economical and eco-conscious option. The edit includes items from fashion brands including Columbia, Fusalp, North Face, OOSC, Free People and Poivre Blanc.

Wes Nelson, comments, “I’ve been a skier since I was young and I’d love to see more people try to find their feet on the slopes, as it is one of the most enjoyable types of trips there is. Crystal and By Rotation’s Ski Edit makes it easier for people to try skiing without the worry of spending too much on items they might only use once or twice a year.”

Lucy Mecklenburgh, comments: “Skiwear can be expensive, especially if you want to wear multiple looks each season. The Ski Edit created by Crystal is really vibrant, stylish and takes some of the stress out of booking a ski holiday with one less thing to worry about.”

Ellie Eyles, Senior Marketing Manager, at Crystal Ski Holidays, comments, “We want to make skiing more affordable and accessible to everyone, and we do understand it’s a holiday that requires special gear and costs can add up. Our research shows that more people would be more willing to borrow or rent items to avoid a potential one off purchase and this partnership with By Rotation removes that concern. Our curated Ski Edit includes a range of trusted brands that will get you skiing in style, without the hassle of having to purchase anything permanently. And we hope it encourages people to get out to the mountains and create memories on the slopes without the worry of additional costs or waste.”

The Ski Edit by Crystal Ski Holidays is available to rent now until the end of the ski season in April next year. You can check out the collection now and start renting here.
