British Broadcaster and meteorologist Laura Tobin has called for action to prevent runaway climate change in a weather forecast video for summer 2050.
It was made to coincide with the prestigious Ashden Awards ceremony that the TV weather presenter is hosting on Wed 2 November at the Royal Geographical Society in London.
The 1 min 27 sec forecast starts by showing some of the impacts that we can expect to experience in 28 years’ time if no new measures are introduced to address global climate change. These include UK summer 2050 temperatures rising to 45°C, wildfires and low water supplies with intense droughts across many other parts of the world.
But she goes on to point out that there are initiatives all over the world already operating, such as Ashden Award-winning organisations in the UK and internationally, whose low carbon innovations could help the world decarbonise at speed if they are scaled up.
The diverse group of 2022 Ashden Award winners include those bringing jobs and clean energy to Kenya, Togo and Zimbabwe, protecting fragile rainforests in Borneo, and UK businesses dramatically reducing waste in the TV and film industry, retrofitting homes and refurbishing wind turbine parts.
In the predictive weather forecast Ms Tobin said: “Time is running out and a lack of support and investment in zero carbon solutions means this could be our future – but it doesn’t have to be. Solutions to the climate emergency are already out there. To prevent climate catastrophe, we have to get to work and fast.”
Laura Tobin recently released the book ‘Everyday Ways To Save Our Planet’ showing how people can take climate action in their daily lives.
The event will also involve musician, producer and climate action advocate, Brian Eno talking to Ashden CEO Harriet Lamb about the need for rapid climate action.
