An Essex-based surveyor has won at the annual RICS Matrics Young Surveyor of the Year Awards, which recognise the most inspiring and influential surveyors – aged 35 or

Zaman Sheikh, estates surveyor for Southend Council, won in the Asset and Facilities Management category at this year’s awards.

Zaman has undertaken a wide range of projects in his role with the council all of which are benefitting the local community. Zaman is part of the Estates Gazette Future
Leaders programme, where he delivered a talk on ADHD and the importance of reasonable adjustments in the workplace, as well as being a LionHeart ambassador publishing a blog on neurodiversity. He has been instrumental in also reviving RICS Matrics in Suffolk
and is on the Advisory Board of the Land Collective, a career development platform engaging young people in the built environment.

As well as working towards his APC, Zaman is consecutively working towards a dual qualification as a property lawyer to enhance his current knowledge and career aspirations.

The judges feedback noted that Zaman is passionately engaged with the surveying profession, showing immense commitment and ambition to build a career. This member would

Commenting on the winners,
Theo Till, Chair of UK RICS Matrics said:
“All of our winners should be extremely proud of their achievements, particularly as the built environment is currently experiencing some of the biggest challenges in history, including climate change, energy consumption, urbanisation, and growth.
Surveying professionals play a vital role in creating and maintaining our built environment to ensure it has a positive impact on communities and people’s lives. The winners’ hard work and unwavering commitment to
help boost skills and standards in the industry is testament to this important role that our profession has on society.

“The diversity of the winners is also encouraging, with 6 of the 10 being women, despite making up just 15% of UK surveyors. Over
the years we have seen more women entering the industry, and we hope that representation of women in surveying can become much stronger with many more female role models.

“RICS is delighted to be able to deliver these awards once again to recognise the dedication and commitment that young surveyors have to the industry and their communities.”
