New directional wayfinding signs have been installed in Braintree town centre to celebrate Braintree’s history and help visitors navigate through the town centre.

Five wayfinding monoliths, which were designed and shaped in partnership with Braintree District Museum, have been installed in key areas of the town centre, including at Great Square, the High Street, Fairfield Road outside Tesco, outside Braintree train station and in the new Town Hall garden and plaza area on Manor Street.

The monoliths contain information about the local area and direct visitors to what local facilities are on offer in Braintree, including heritage assets, shopping, leisure and attractions.

These are the first set of monoliths coming to the town centre, with more being installed in the future.

The wayfinding investment forms part of Braintree District Council’s pedestrianisation scheme, which aims to revitalise and future-proof the town centre, and has seen it created in a new, safer public space with improved paving and surfacing to eradicate long-running safety concerns by residents, new trees and seating areas.

Cllr Tom Cunningham, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth at Braintree District Council, said: “These new signs are a great way of not only providing local information to help guide visitors around the town centre but also promoting the wonderful facilities, attractions and history that Braintree has to offer.”

Sheila Charrington, Chairman of Braintree District Museum Trust, said: “Braintree Museum is delighted to have been able to provide the historic photographs and highlight some of the fascinating history of the town for visitors and local residents to enjoy from its important local history archive. We look forward to welcoming visitors to discover more at the Museum.”

Various snagging improvements are continuing to be carried out to the paving and resin in Braintree town centre by the scheme’s contractor which are due to be complete in the next few weeks.
