On 9th August, Southend’s finest – ASYLUMS – return with the soaring power-pop single: “Understand The Psychology”.
The cut arrives as the follow-up to their recent critically acclaimed comeback singles “Crypto Klepto” and “Scatterbrain”, all of which will feature on their keenly awaited forthcoming album ‘Signs Of Life’ – out 14th October via Cool Thing Records.
Asylums have always had an emotive dimension to their frantic rock sound. On “Understand The Psychology” they capture the melodic urgency of 90’s songsmiths The Wannadies and Ash and fuse it with the disenfranchised longing of The Replacements and Hüsker Dü. Throw it all together, and the results make for an uplifting, impassioned adrenaline rush; further evidencing a band at the top of their game.
Arriving with an official video directed friend of the band JJ Eringa, the accompanying visuals for “Understand The Psychology” draw inspiration from Terry Gilliam’s Monty’s Python animations and feature exclusive footage of the band recording at Rockfield Studios interspersed with their storming recent performance on the Glastonbury Leftfield stage in 2022.
Upcoming album, ‘Signs of Life’, was recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studioswith genre-bending Manic Street Preachers producer Dave Eringa in the driving seat. As well as dialling the rock action up to 10, this record also draws from the likes of R.E.M., The Magnetic Fields and The Beatles who all arguably made some of their best work during a live hiatus.
On producing the current single from ‘Signs of Life’ Dave Eringa enthuses:
“Understand The Psychology” is a great example of how Luke’s songwriting has developed – it retains all the power that Asylums have always had but welds it to a pop melody with Cobain-esque panache!”
The world has changed, Asylums have changed…but one thing remains valid, making music is still an essential craft and serves as creative medicine for many musicians and listeners alike.
Alongside their work as a band, Asylums have helped to nurture a roster of equally creative individuals with their Cool Thing Records label team – putting out amazing records by the likes of BLAB, A Cause In Distress and many more, whilst still finding time to run a bi-weekly arts advocacy radio show called ‘Cool Thing Presents’ which airs in London and New York on the Culture channel of Soho Radio.
While ‘Signs of Life’ for an Asylums UK Tour are yet to be detected, the Essex band have confirmed they will play a one-off show at Rough Trade East following the release of their latest album… Details below.
