Introducing duo Paper Hands who release their debut single, ‘Early Warning’, on 22nd July on their own label via Tunecore. The track was self-produced and mixed but was mastered by Pete Maher (1975/Maximo Park/The Killers/Snow Patrol).
The band wrap luscious, layered soundscapes around angular and angsty lyrics to detonate an exciting, expansive musical mind bomb. Veering wildly from 80s influenced pop and nuanced new wave, to hollering modern rock hewn from both sides of the border, this is the sound that’s confident, focused and creatively fearless. Paper Hands flick the middle finger at mediocrity and grab the future by the balls.
Paper Hands are Jordan Campbell 31 (lead vocals) and Billy Taylor 32 (drums/ guitar/ bass) and the pair have been lifelong friends since meeting in the early 90’s aged 3 & 4!
They met as next door neighbours when their parents were in the air force at RAF Leaming in North Yorkshire. They had a bond from the start and remained best friends ever since. Musically, this bond had remained unexplored until the whole world changed and forced the majority of humanity to remain inside.
“Early Warning started life as nothing but a voice note but became the catalyst for us creating Paper Hands. As a song it is a pure and honest exploration of styles bonded together by a signature rawness we aim to preserve. The way we write lyrics comes more from feeling than direct story telling or anecdotal referencing and ‘Early Warning’ is not exempt from this. This means that even to us, the songs meaning can change from time to time depending on how you listen to it. It also leaves it open to interpretation from whoever choses to listen to it.” BILLY TAYLOR
Jordan – Based in Ayr, Scotland he spent most of his childhood in Grenoble, France attending international schools. This lifestyle affected the way he was drawn to music or the melody in songs over the lyrics themselves. In 2013 he started a band called ‘ The Belafonte’ and played with them until November of 2019 when it inevitably fizzled out. His influences range from the math rock/traditional Spanish singing of Pixvae to the funky chops of Vulf peck. He also loves pop and Bruno mars and Lizzo are currently at the top of his playlist.
Billy – Although Birmingham based, is native to the North East of England but with strong Scottish roots. His influences are diverse – ranging from classic pop and country to hard rock and metal. One of his favourite artists at the moment is Theo Katzman who he says perfectly blends technical ability and story telling into his songs.
He currently is listening to bands like Beartooth and Rammstein, as well as more contemporary artists like Nothing but Thieves, Holly Humberstone and FINNEAS. Previously he toured and charted with multiple rock acts such as Inglorious, DeeVer and Vega, as well as collaborating with pop/rock artists like The UMA.
