Bedroom banquets are the new trend sweeping the nation

Home and furniture brand Habitat has revealed ‘bedroom banquets’ are sweeping the nation, as Brits swap the dinner table for the bedroom.

The poll of 2,000 respondents found one in 10 cited eating as one of their favourite things to do in the boudoir (10%), with TV-watching another top pick (36%).

Bedroom banqueters are enjoying an array of dishes between the sheets, with nearly half (49%) tucking into spaghetti bolognaise, roast dinners (42%) and pizzas (33%). Other firm favourites include a Chinese takeaway (26%), fish and chips (25%), fried chicken (14%) and a staple fry-up (12%).

Celebrities are also jumping on the trend with everyone from Nadia Sawalha to Nigella Lawson having confessed to eating in bed. Bedroom banquets are even reinventing how we socialise, with more than one in five (21%) Brits’ hosting friends from the bedroom to enjoy big TV moments such as the return of Killing Eve, Peaky Blinders and Bridgerton.

In fact, Brits are so accustomed to eating between the sheets that one in five (20%) now stashes condiments and cutlery on their bedside table. Bedroom banqueters are even reaching for patterned sheets to hide the consequences, with Habitat’s most popular bedding sets including the new Naturalist Leaf Panel and Naturalist Floral Dobby.

Meanwhile ‘TV dinners’ from the sofa are fast becoming a thing of the past, with one in five (20%) preferring to watch up to 20 hours of TV in bed each week instead. The fixation with bed-based binge-watching is reflected in the uptake of Habitat’s King-size TV Ottoman Bed Frame; it was the second biggest selling bed from November 2021 to January 2022.

So great is our obsession with bedroom banquets, the lockdown trend of ‘table-scaping’ is being replaced by ‘bed-scaping’. A third (35%) arrange pillows for the optimum dining posture (and to aid digestion), one in five (19%) lay out a cover to protect sheets from accidental spillages, and one in seven (14%) light a candle for the perfect ambiance. The trend is going down less well with long-suffering bed-mates, as one in five (20%) cite crumbs, rustling wrappers and spilt drinks as some of the more irritating consequences.

A Habitat Spokesperson said: “Bedroom banquets are one of the more unusual trends we’ve spotted of late, but as living spaces get more crowded, it’s really no surprise to see Brits’ retreating to the bedroom to dine in peace.

“At Habitat, we’ve got everything bedroom banqueters need to take mealtime comfort to the next level, from bedside tables with storage space for condiments to bedroom trays that can balance dishes.

“We’re even offering our customers the chance to apply for free bed-scaping advice so they can dine in bed in style[1].”

Habitat is offering free bed-scaping advice to help bedroom banqueters do so in style. Anyone seeking tips can contact the bed-scaping team on [email protected]. The service will run until March 31st, 2022.
