Youngsters at a Tendring football club have received a funding boost as they kick on from the lockdown frustrations of recent times and head for a new challenge.
Frinton & Walton Youth FC under-15s girls’ team has received a £250 Team Sport award for the fourth time from UK Power Networks, the company which distributes electricity across the East of England.
The money will be put towards new training equipment and takes to £1,000 the company has donated to the side over the past four years and comes as the team prepares to join the Suffolk League for the coming season.
Employee Richard Procter, a project manager in Colchester, whose daughter Lauren plays for the team while he volunteers as an assistant referee during games, applied for the award.
Richard said: “The Frinton & Walton club was established in 1978 and currently has around 20 boys’ and girls’ teams from age six to 18.
“As with other sports clubs, the coronavirus pandemic had an impact on last two seasons. Last season we finished unbeaten and runners up to Clacton in the Essex Girls’ U14s North division. We started the season in September, but then had quite a long break due to the pandemic.
“Fortunately we were able to resume in April and finish the season. Moving to the Suffolk League should give the talented players we have more chance to progress as there are more matches. Everyone is really grateful for the funding we receive from UK Power Networks.”
The Team Sport Award scheme encourages UK Power Networks staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and developing sporting opportunities.
Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. During 2020, more than 60 teams benefitted to a combined sum of £15,500.
