Wells is known to have frequented the casinos in Monte Carlo, playing Roulette as his game of choice. Wells dug out his place in history when he won a whopping two million francs within 48 hours, one of the largest wins to ever be seen at a Roulette table. However, his history with the game isn’t as seamless as you might imagine – whilst Wells bagged the big bucks, he also lost a great deal along the way.
You may think that there are certain tips and tricks that you can incorporate into your gameplay to almost guarantee a win, you couldn’t be more wrong. Just like any classic casino game, it all comes down to chance and, arguably, luck. Joseph Jagger
Jagger was a standout name on the Roulette scene back in the 19th century, taking the game extremely seriously. He was convinced that he could work out a pattern – what we would now classify as a form of card counting if this was a game of Blackjack, just without the cards this time! Jagger would invest great deals of money in hiring spectators to go down to the gambling hot spots in Monte Carlo and report back with all the winning numbers they witnessed. At this time, it was also possible to find bias or faulty wheels, which Jagger used to his advantage.
It appeared that he was determined to find a way to win that didn’t involve chance or any particular skill and, although he managed to eventually walk away with $400,000, it makes you wonder how much he must have lost through this obsession!
Chris Boyd
Here we have a more modern figure in Roulette history, who worked as a skilful software developer in the UK before he found his fame. Boyd had accumulated an impressive amount of savings from working faithfully at his job for so many years, before deciding to dip into his nest egg at various casinos in Las Vegas.
Boyd placed a shocking $220,000 on a single spin of the wheel at The Horseshoe Club, despite the casino having a limit of $100,000. The player managed to bend the rules in his favour by convincing the croupier to cover the second zero pocket and convert the wheel into the European edition. Boyd placed his savings on red and won – doubling his money. Taking the sensible option, Boyd disappeared from the limelight after this iconic moment, presumably going off to live a life of luxury.
