Basildon Council: up to three hours of car parking free until 4th January

Basildon Council has updated its popular free parking initiative to encourage people to shop local and shop safe.

All visitors to the Council’s car parks will be able to park for three hours free of charge between 8am and 6pm. Normal charges will resume if people remain in a car park for three hours or more.

All council car parks are free to use overnight, from 6pm–8am, no matter the duration of use, along with being free all day Saturday and Sunday.

The Chairman of the Neighbourhoods and Public Spaces Committee, Councillor David Harrison said: “We want residents to be able to access their local shops, and we want to support our high streets wherever possible, and providing three hours of free access to council car parks is a big way we can help with this.

“We introduced free parking in July and unfortunately a disproportionate of vehicles have been staying in the car parks all day. The purpose of the free parking is to encourage shoppers back into the high street in a safe way, so we’ve had to limit free parking to the first three hours of your stay.”

The new regulations will come into effect from Wednesday 14 October, and normal charges will resume on the 4th January 2021.
