The Luna Cinema Announces a Socially-Distanced Summer of Cinema Fun Across the Country

Summer is back on track as The Luna Cinema’s 12th consecutive open-air film season is set to return in a brand new socially spacious way! After a somewhat turbulent few months for cinema, when it appeared only drive in screens might see the light of day this year, film fans across the country (and those without cars) can now look forward to summer evenings in gorgeous settings, enjoying great films on giant screens under the stars.

Each Luna screening will take place in the fresh air, with social distanced pitches allowing the audience to keep safely apart at all times. Tickets for all Luna open air screenings this summer will offer a designated pitch per booking group, each with directors’ chairs laid out in advance for each person, ensuring guests have space to kick back and enjoy the setting safely. Seating will be sanitised between each screening, and bookers can choose whether to book a two-person or four-person pitch, though all members of each party must be from no more than two households. Larger groups from more households can sit in adjacent pitches. Each Luna event will offer socially distanced queuing for toilets and ample hand sanitising facilities for all guests, allowing attendees to safely relax and enjoy the ultimate cinema experience under the stars. As always, The Luna Cinema audiences are also welcome to bring along picnics to screenings.

Film-lovers across the country can choose from scores of outdoor screenings in some of the UK’s most prestigious and historically important venues. Venues featuring in the season include Leeds Castle, Blenheim Palace, Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, Castle Howard, Waddesdon Manor, Hampton Court Palace, Bolton Abbey, and Lincoln Castle, to name a few. Also, for the first time ever, the Luna big screen will be taking up a summer residency at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, on the stunning South Grounds, adjacent to the Thames. *

Anyone missing the big screen during lockdown will be in for a treat with an amazing line-up of box office greats and award winners this summer season, with the Oscar winning Rocketman, featuring Golden Globe winner Taron Egerton as Elton John. Drama lovers are also set for a thrilling time watching this year’s box office big hitters, Joker and Judy, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Renee Zellweger in the respective titular roles. The season also features screenings of the year’s most critically acclaimed releases such as Parasite, Jojo Rabbit, Knives Out and Tarantino’s award winning Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, alongside the return of the ever popular classics, Grease, Dirty Dancing , Pretty Woman and The Greatest Showman.

George Wood, founder of The Luna Cinema, said: “As much as we have fully embraced drive in format, we’re thrilled to have been given the green light to run our season of socially distanced outdoor cinema. I know I for one spent most of May in lockdown dreaming of an evening in a lovely green space watching a great film on a giant screen under the stars, and wondering whether this summer might come and go without that experience, so it’s with a mixture of joy and relief that we are able to welcome our audiences back to open air screenings. The Luna team has worked tirelessly to modify our events to incorporate social distancing and firmly believe we have a solution that will ensure our audiences feel safe coming to the events and at the same time are able to fully enjoy an uncompromised cinema under the stars experience. After the last six months, we all need those few hours of pure escapism that cinema does better than anything else, and gathering with friends and loved ones to share it in these stunning locations will make it all the sweeter.”

The Luna Cinema also recently launched The Luna Drive-In Cinema in May at sites across the country in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Film goers have enjoyed sold-out screenings at venues across the country including London’s Printworks and Allianz Park Stadium, as well as other iconic regional sites such as Warwick Castle, Blenheim Palace, Knebworth House, Tatton Park, Harewood House and Lulworth Castle. In an extension to this, the company has partnered exclusively with the world-leading Royal Opera House, and is screening the likes of Swan Lake, La Traviata, La Boheme and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It is also showing the hugely popular National Theatre Live production of Fleabag, starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
