With more than 650 individual contributors from over 1,150 visitors Basildon Council is now sifting through the feedback left during a six-week consultation period about its draft masterplan for Basildon town centre.
The formal consultation closed on Sunday 12 July.
Leader of Basildon Council Gavin Callaghan thanked people for their feedback: “I am delighted that so many have engaged with our consultation and taken the time to study the ideas in the masterplan. We have sought to make this consultation as engaging as possible despite the COVID restrictions we have been living under.
“What is clear is that the public has given Councillors an overwhelming mandate for change in our town centre. It is up to us now to make sure we use this mandate to deliver the big, bold, transformational change that the public want to see.
“People can see that we can’t apply sticking plasters to Basildon town centre if it is to survive and thrive into the future. It needs radical surgery – only a total transformation will do.
“Change is happening now and we need to be in control of that change to make sure we get the best town centre we can get.
“We will look carefully at all the comments we have received and use them to create a new thriving town centre in Basildon. One that is open to all, and home to a vibrant, mixed community of people, boasting new cultural and entertainment facilities that befit the town’s strategic importance and its pioneering, new town spirit.
“This is an exciting time for Basildon and we look forward to getting the regeneration started in the coming months.”
