Basildon Council has announced that Barleylands Recycling Centre is being prepared for reopening – with strict social distancing measures in place for public and staff safety.
A “one in, one out” policy will be used and members of the public may be asked to queue when accessing the site in order to ensure that site cleanliness and social distancing measures can be maintained.
The social distancing measures could cause delays, and the council is asking the public to expect visits to the centre to take longer to complete than previously experienced.
Staggered visits are being advised and the public are asked to visit only if items that need to be disposed of could cause a hazard if left at home.
Chairman of the Neighbourhoods and Public Spaces Committee Councillor David Harrison said:
“I want to say a big thank you to our residents for their patience while the Barleylands Centre has been closed.
“However, I need to also forewarn residents that there will be a number of restrictions that could result in delays.
“While the centre will be open, I’m asking people to only use it when absolutely necessary based on a reasonable assessment of what people are facing with their waste – and applying common sense judgement.
“We must make sure that usage of the site remains as safe as possible to visitors and staff.”
Pitsea Recycling Centre for Household Waste, which is run by Essex County Council, will also be reopening soon under similar restrictions.
Barleylands will reopen on Monday 18 May, and further news on the reopening of both facilities will be available closer to the date.
All kerbside collections are still taking place and special collections are available.
