Around 750 parents and young people headed to the Towngate Theatre in Basildon on Tuesday (8 October) to find out more about the further education and career opportunities available to 15-19 year olds once they have finished their exams.

Basildon Council organise the annual Your Future event which was sponsored this year by local employers Brown & Carroll, and Adult Community Learning (ACL), who provide further education opportunities.

The event was widely attended by professionals and industry insiders from the local community with figures from the hospitality, business, and childcare sectors all on hand to offer support and advice. For example, young people with an interest in pursuing a Career in childcare were provided with resources and contacts from local nannying agencies, au pairs, and private tutors. The attendees could also take advantage of career advice on resume building and document management, and everything else that needs attention while applying for a job. They even got insights on how to use an ATS resume checker for tailoring it for their specific careers.

Councillor Adele Brown, Chairman of the Infrastructure and Inclusive Growth Committee, said “It can be difficult for young people to decide what to do once they finish year 11 and that’s why the Your Future event is so important. The feedback we have had from parents and young people who attended was that they didn’t realise there were so many opportunities available to them in the borough – and that’s what it’s all about.”

Amongst the opportunities being offered were a selection of online courses like this Online Beauty Training. With life increasingly moving online, especially for young people, online courses can offer a flexible and more accessible alternative to those who have other commitments, such as caring, that may make it harder to attend training in person. The BBC estimates that there are around 800,000 young carers in the UK, showing how completely vital it is to provide accessible training to every young person, ensuring nobody is left behind.

Councillor Brown also noted “I would like to thank all of the exhibitors and our sponsors for making Your Future 2019 possible, and to our apprentices for being great ambassadors for Basildon Council and using their first-hand knowledge and experience to help guide others.”
