Senior members of Guangxi Medical University in China, including the Vice President and the Dean of the College of Nursing, visited our wards for eldery patients at Basildon Hospital on 4 July 2019.

Hosted by Anglia Ruskin University, the delegates visited our hospital to see the specialised care we provide for this group of patients, especially those living with dementia.

The delegates were impressed with the services and facilities we provide for our older patients. In particular, they were fascinated with the memory books filled with stories from over the decades. These books help patients with dementia spark conversation and share their stories.

The team also visited the Frailty Unit, Osler and Lionel Cosin wards. These wards have reminiscence rooms that are interactive spaces and include a pub, tearoom, and hairdresser’s. The rooms help patients with dementia to have conversations around familiar and daily activities.

Deputy head of nursing and midwifery at Anglia Ruskin University, Louise Jenkins, accompanied the delegates and said:

“It was a pleasure having the team visit and see the amazing things being done for the elderly at Basildon Hospital.

“Shared learning plays a vital role in improving the care we all provide to patients. I’m glad the team felt that there was lots they could take away and duplicate in their hospitals in China. Likewise, I’m looking forward to strengthening our relationships so we can learn from them.”
