A new chairman has been appointed at Tendring District Council (TDC) after the authority’s annual meeting.
Mark Platt handed over the chains of office to newly elected chairman Cllr Daniel Land who was voted in by councillors with 24 votes to 24 in favour of other contender Cllr Jayne Chapman, with outgoing Chairman Mark Platt having the deciding casting vote. Cllr Jeff Bray was elected as deputy chairman with newly elected Chairman Daniel Land having the deciding casting vote.
Mr Platt thanked councillors for all of their support during his two-year term in office, and wished the new chairman the very best as they took up the mantle of the prestigious role.
The chairman not only oversees full council meetings, but is also the civic and ceremonial leader of the authority – representing Tendring at numerous events within the district and elsewhere.
Cllr Neil Stock was elected as leader of TDC for a four year term.
Appointments of deputy leader and Cabinet members will be announced in due course.
Cllr Stock said the new administration – made up of the Conservatives, UKIP and the Holland-on-Sea Group on the council – would look to “continue to put Tendring on the map”.
“I thank all members for the trust they have placed in me, I want this district to be the best district in Essex, the most economically successful.
“It won’t be easy, we won’t do it all in four years but the works starts tonight.”
He added his gratitude to Cllr Terry Allen who was nominated against him as leader, saying he had every right to try to form an administration and it had been a close race.
