Southend Business Improvement District (BID) has teamed up with ForwardMotion to launch an art competition promoting the benefits of cycling, walking and using public transport.

The competition is part of the Southend Festival (14 June – 14 July 2019), and both the BID and ForwardMotion want the competition to inspire more visitors to travel to the hundreds of different events by foot, bike, bus or train.

Southend BID and ForwardMotion are looking for artists to create a design for the festival. The winning design will take pride of place on Southend High Street for the duration of the festival. It will also be used on posters placed at bus stops throughout Southend, along with designs from the competition’s runners-up.

The theme of the competition is ‘cycling, walking and using public to benefit your health and the environment’.

Dennis Baldry, Chair of Southend BID, said: “We are expecting over 10,000 visitors to the Southend Festival and we’d like to encourage them to can use make the most of the dedicated cycle routes and free bike parking in the town centre, or take advantage of our great public transport links. We would love artists to help us promote the benefits of people cycling, walking and using public transport. So, whether you’re a hobbyist, an amateur or a professional artist, we’d love to see your eye-catching designs.”

He added “Your entry can be on paper or in a computer file and the winners will be transformed into pieces of public art for the duration of the Festival and beyond. The competition is open to anyone and everyone, whether you’re a professional, enthusiastic amateur, creative kid or even have a dog who thinks he’s Pawcasso.”

All entries must be submitted as digital files to [email protected] by Monday 10 June. No more than five entries may be submitted per person. Entries must be in JPEG format and be no larger than 2MB.

The competition is open to everyone in south Essex. Only two-dimensional, original artwork will be considered.

Launching on Friday 14 June, the Southend Festival is a six-week long celebration of art and culture. Featuring some of Britain’s leading stand-up comedians, artists, bands and performers, with hundreds of events throughout the town centre and seafront.
