In a world of social media muppets, Old Man Like Ron is the real deal – the puppet creation of geezer film actor Nick Nevern has become a bona fide internet sensation, racking up millions of views on Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. The grumpy old man schtick is a welcome dose of brutal, old school comedy in an increasingly politically correct world.
Nevern, who has starred in gritty Britflicks such as The Sweeney and Vendetta, wrote, directed and starred in the comedy smash The Hooligan Factory in 2015 so his geezery comedy credentials are plain to see, but even he was surprised by Ron’s explosion in popularity. He had originally bought the puppet for a comedy skit with infamous stand up Dapper Laughs but stuffed him in a drawer when the sketch was shelved.
When Nevern moved house, he rediscovered the puppet and started using him in sketches. Ron now has 28,000 followers on Instagram and 45,000 on Twitter and there are even rumours of an Old Man Ron movie: a sort of council estate TED. Ron has travelled with Nick on location for Rise of the Footsoldier 4 and even attended the Berlin Film Festival, barely avoiding sparking World War 3.
